DAYS LIKE GRAVEL

days like gravel
tiny stones in my shoes
lodging in places
I cannot dig out
with dirty jagged fingernails
searching the numb surface
wanting to pick them off like scabs
that could ooze and bleed
and be bandaged up
only to be ripped off
white flags surrendering

mornings
swirling around and around
in a bottomless cup of coffee
that cannot be swallowed
over the lump
in my silent parched throat
thirsty from the deluge

my baby boy’s senseless
brain aneurysm
his tiny too-big head and perfect skin
and heart failure and death so close
which keeps me in a foreign country
where I cannot hold
the weathered hand of
my emaciated father
while his cancer slowly kills him
all this and
the departure of the you that is me
these words
cannot be enveloped
in metaphors
to vomit out
that which sickens me
alone in this homeless room
they sit on the page
with their literal tragedy
the narrative of my life
and there’s nowhere to go
but here

THE AIR PARTS FROM THE HORN

The air
parts from the horn
becoming silence
But not until
it has become God

BIOGRAPHY

My biography is quite the tale
Verbs doing all kinds of unbelievable
Reeling from the turning wheel
The potter
pulling at the walls
of her wet clay pot
searching for the center
where the spin is mono
the perfect roundness it promises
Maybe there’s more
to the imperfect bend in the clay
That remains to be seen

But for now I’m left
with the events of it all
This and That got capitalized
because they reached
the bone marrow
The red of the bleeding
is a word here
but there it was
what you see when you see red
It was also the kiss of joy
exploding spring buds
ocean waves licking my toes,
foaming at the mouth

There was the you and me of it
the players
the random genetic mix
molecules colliding into plots
story lines
foreshadowing and climaxing
comedy and tragedy
My tears fell
into applauding hands
at the entrances and exits
Hospital tubes and strands of hair
pulling the curtains back
the stage, the table, the bed,
sand and grass

HAVE YOU PUT HER IN A DRESS YET?

“Have you put her in a dress yet?”
she asked me
“No, actually I haven’t.”
“What?” she replied
“She’s a girl”
and I don’t know how to
punctuate that
Dot dot dot…?
My baby girl
who hasn’t worn
her first dress yet
who smells of little pieces of snow
whose fists are still closed
to the wet and the warm
of the world
the rough and the smooth
of what is to come
Pastel pages
Rosebud lips that have yet
to speak
the unknown words
waiting to spill out
The world,
as of yet,
deaf to her song
Christmas Eve, the beginning
naming you
naming you
Ayana
Ayana Sofia
Japanese Aya, beautifully colored,
intricately woven
Na, fruitful

What will your first dress be?
Will it resemble
the one your heart will one day
shake inside of
lost in dance,
warm hands on your back
as you sway to
the music?

And the only way to finish
the song
is
…?

WAITING FOR ME

I feel you
waiting for me
your grass fingers
promising to wrap
their green around me
Who will walk in on us?
Our time together
the utter you and me of it
Your silent ears
hearing my silent songs
commanding our dance
only to
finally, leave each other

and here you are
the next hour, next day
waiting for me
the ball I can’t cough out
My lonely companion
the only visitor knocking
on my solitary door
The you and me of it
This noise,
our dialogue
the monotone harmony
Spectator trembling leaves
dancing around us
as we cry in our still embrace
The you and me of it

Why do you always
force me to answer for you?
My too quiet companion
screaming at me to be let out
As if

You wait and then you
take my hands
the melancholic cold
of your touch
mad conductor
of my exhausted strings
always returning to the chorus,
the still silent longing
and celebration
of these words

WORDS COLD AS BONES

Your words cold as bones
left from the dancing creature
you gave birth to
You spoke them once
(A heart pumps steady time
unaware it will cease)
Silent skeleton song
Paper white remains
A vacant cavity
Moot the scars
we lived so hard for
Meaningless words like forever redundant
in the face of snapped-neck paralysis
Lifeblood drained out
Vomit, a precious lost
Bodily dysfunction
Exclamations
screamed and uttered
to record living
Lyrics remnant teeth
can no longer chew on
or swallow
Lump out of throat
Dried up tongue
Tasteless motherless tongue
spit out its last word
Silence is not an acknowledgment

WARRIOR FACE

In the morning,
when I’m painting on my warrior face
I glide the stick over my bottom lip
stretching it slightly and releasing it
I wonder if the day will ask me
to wield my sword high
or if, instead
it will hang limp by my side
the events and the uneventfulness
of 24 hours passed
when I will put my warrior face
on again

I slowly move from my private room
to the playing field
the unpredictable ground
on which we stand still
on which we writhe and coil
on which we explode like
an unexpected thunderstorm

THE ROOM

When it entered the room
the window panes shook

It pounded into the room
in dancing plumes
and firework cracker teeth
singing madly

It poured into the room
soaking tea in a clay pot
changing its strength and color
like sunset soaked earth

It ripped into the room
with ambulance siren screams
clawing and tearing
breaking apart

It waltzed into the room
pausing after those three beats
kicking up its heels
spinning in tuxedoed orbits

It slid into the room
on swaying maiden honey hips
and slightly parted lips
with sweet languid longing
and tender satisfaction

It entered the room with pets
and gardens
and barbeque sauce
and automatic sprinkler systems
filling the room
with August aroma

It pulled its way into the room
sucking
lost inside itself
In needing out
desperately inseparably polarized

It seeped into the room
It spilled over the top
ran the down the sides
leaked through the cracks
and soaked through to the bottom

It tickled the room
digging in between each rib
with familiar fingers
and punch-lined anecdotes
with neck-kissed giggles
and knock-knock jokes

It exploded into the room
threatening to blow
the whole thing wide open
It ripped trees out of the ground
and sent chards across the sky
Tides flapped against shores
like violent flags

It stopped in the room
It emptied the walls
and scraped the floor and ceiling clean
It voided itself out
and canceled all reservations
until it was no more

It chewed its way into the room
It bit the skin
sucked all the seeds out
and swallowed the pulp
while the sweet nectar
trickled down its grinning chin

It walked into the room
sat down in a metal folding chair
opened a black case
and lifted the instrument
out of its purple velvet
It screwed together each part
covered the holes
licked its lips
and blew

It was forced into the room
drug in by one arm
With dug-in heels
it fought for the door
it resisted but weakened and crumpled
taken by its opponent

It dropped into the room
free-falling on its way down
gravity pulling at it
driving it faster and faster
towards inevitable impact

It lit the room
on wild fire
Flames rose
throwing up sparks
spitting and crackling
igniting the other and spreading

It crowded into the room
cleared its throat
and elbowed its way in
it shuffled through the multitude
smelling sweat and body heat
it huddled, surrounded

It entered the room
and the room centered it
spun it like clay on a wheel
The room gathered and connected it
wove it together and knotted it
joined and harmonized it
communicated with it
understood and adhered to it
And when it was altogether and whole
it was once and for all
the room

LAST RITES

Do you remember when
you christened me?
You, with your dead Jesus
who wouldn’t let you live
Your knife blades
carved out my flesh
into a first-blooming flower
The petals
pink as salmon swimming upstream
to their delicious execution

You said you had been drug in
As for me, I was escorted
A tuxedoed chauffeur driving me
into a car accident
Awestruck by the joyride
I sucked in the scenery
the red sky licking my wounds
before they broke open at the scene

Do you remember how wet
was my baptism?
It drowned me
Your exquisite hands
pulled me below
and jerked my head back up by my hair
As I coughed and sputtered
you held me like a soul mate
and answered with a kiss
like communion on my tongue

In the morning
we held each berry
before sinking our teeth in
With stained lips
we savored them
knowing their whole lives
were about our purple mouths

We laughed
until all our teeth fell out
our tongues lost
without their white walls
fanged inner-city billboards
with graffiti-sprayed cries
of lost immigrants
in a foreign land that promised
milk and honey

Sugary opiates
that sweetly sucked
the bone marrow out
Do you remember how you opened me?
spreading me wide
like a mango ripped open
its nectar crying out over its skin
or like steel clamps pulling my chest apart
for open-heart surgery

Do you remember how you anointed me?
your lips
and my lips
and all that spilled out of them
the words and songs and saliva
painted a story all over our bodies
it had a plot but no context
it was a first novel
an immature infant
suckling the milk out
of breasts heavy
with the weight of woman

Woman with the foreign tongue
singing a lullaby
to a death squad
You would save me with my own sins
like Sunday lovers hiding in a confessional
hailing to what we knew was most divine
answered by just another crucifixion
Your long languid fingers
sliding through the holes in my hands

Do you remember how exalted
was our resurrection
after I gave birth to your death?
Like red plastic roses on a tombstone
you decorated my despair
Your trembling hands pulled
back the sheets of my sickbed
you reached through the middle part
and laid me back
burying your black head
in my between
and delivered me

Do you remember my unction?
With the laying on of your hands
you typed out our sentences
I swallowed your seeds
choking back the vomit
that their roots refused to release
Like a terminal patient
I gave myself to your cancer
I closed my eyes
as the winter snow quietly fell
and listened
for the oncoming deafening silence
At last you cleared your throat
and slowly fingered your new pages
Your lips finally parted
and as my heartbeat slowed
you read
me
my last rites
